The Joshua Tree, U2's fifth studio album, was released by Island Records on 9 March 1987. It was a departure from the 1984 release, The Unforgettable Fire, which featured ambient experimentation - the band instead sought a harder-hitting sound taking inspiration from American and Irish roots music.
