The Golden age hip hop refers to hip hop music created from the mid or mid-late 1980s to the early or early-mid 1990s, particularly by artists and musicians originating from the New York.

The East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry was a dispute between artists and fans, from the   early-mid 1990s. A focal point of the rivalry was the feud between East Coast–based rapper the Notorious B.I.G. and West Coast–based rapper Tupac Shakur They were murdered in drive-by shootings within six months of each other, after which the feud soon ended with a "peace" summit in 1997 at the behest of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
