It stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Tyra Ferrell, Laurence Fishburne, Regina King, and Angela Bassett. Dubbed a "coming-of-age crime drama," the film chronicles Tre Styles, whose world turns upside-down when he is sent to live with his father in South Central. Referencing the 1987 Eazy-E rap song, the movie is a gritty product of director John Singleton's film school application. He then took the project to Columbia Pictures, which led to the start of principal photography. Boyz n the Hood was an instant critical and commercial success, nabbing a Best Director & Best Original Screenplay Oscar nod, making Singleton the youngest and first African American nominated in the category. The U.S Library of Congress even selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.
