This Vintage Leather Bomber Jacket features classic vintage style and is complete with vintage air force patches on the sleeves and chest. Originally designed as "flight jackets" by the US Army Aviation Clothing Board in 1917, these jackets were created to provide warmth for pilots during WWI in the open-air cockpits of early fighter planes. As aviation technology advanced and cockpits became more enclosed, new styles were introduced, including the leather US Army Type A-1 in 1927. This jacket had a knit waistband and cuffs, which not only insulated from the cold, but also gave it a flattering fit. Today, the modern nylon bomber jacket still features a knitted collar, cuffs, and waistband, much like the 1927 A-1 model (although it had a button-up closure).
