What is coastal grandpa fashion aesthetic

Grandpas are F..ing stylish, and if you haven’t noticed that by now, you need to respect your elders. Over the past few years, particularly as we’ve moved more and more into a post-streetwear world, it’s become clear that instead of nabbing some items from your dad’s wardrobe, you need to be raiding your granddad’s.

All across Social Media, videos breaking down different types of grandpa style ‘eclectic grandpa’, ‘coastal grandpa’ and ‘desert grandpa’, have been popping up. But, it’s not just on your FYP that we’re seeing the trend. on the WWW Searches for ‘Grandpa core’ and ‘Grandad style’ are up 65 and 60 per cent respectively.

Why dress like a grandfather you might be wondering? There’s a considered irreverence that defines grandfather style, a quality only obtained through a lifetime of figuring out what works for you and the DGAF attitude that only comes when a ‘ job’ is a thing of the past. It’s a fully synchronised combination of functionality and comfort that you only really see with men who dedicate their lives to leisurely pursuits, like like time part time Fisherman, or buying small boat only to spend countless hours cleaning and restoring it. A small beanie or a captain's hat, Beat Up old chinos with paint stains, and dockside shoes are worn with thrashed cardigans, cosy overcoats and loud scarfs.

The trick with pulling this sort of thing off as a younger man, comes from finding Vintage pieces that you love, wearing them to death, and actively taking the time to learn how to layer, style and ultimately, live in them. In the end, they will look as natural as a beat-up, buttery loafer does on your grandfather. or the way a denim jacket looks on Bob Dylan.

For the last couple of years. Every time we turn around, a new “design trend” emerges without warning. Addamscore, Barbiecore, aso.. we at Restore typically eschew trendy pieces in favor of more classic, storied ones that will remain timeless for years to come. Rarely does a design trend come along that makes me want to redecorate my entire home—until now. Enter my current obsession: coastal grandpa.

But I predict the coastal grandpa trend is here to stay long past one season. This layered look—characterized by saturated colors, brown furniture, rich leather and classic patterns like tartan, houndstooth, plaid and ticking stripes—is inspired by the rugged and wild coast.

It’s not a trendy look that can be achieved from buying some moody-colored home goods at our local Ikea store; the charm is its inherent patina that only comes from a lifetime of collecting antiques and other treasures (think: bowls filled with restaurant matchbooks, a wall of mounted stag antlers or a library full of favorite tomes). A coastal grandpa house is where you want to escape the drizzly, cold days of winter to curl up with a good book in front of a crackling fire.

No space embodies the coastal grandpa aesthetic quite as well as Dornoch Station, a Marine & Lawn property located in the quaint seaside town of Dornoch, Scotland, adjacent to Royal Dornoch Golf Club (a top-three golf course in the world, which only adds to the coastal grandpa vibe, natch). The property was recently named one of World's Most Beautiful Hotels for 2023—and it's easy to see why.

Long before Instagram influencers got in on the act, fashion designer Ralph Lauren turned his lifestyle into his brand and his brand into his lifestyle.

Ralph Lauren’s Montauk Getaway Is All About Simple Summer Pleasures. Yes, its interior has been sleeked up with vintage pieces in pale woods, rattan and wicker, lots of comfortable upholstery covered in crisp linen, and elegant Ralph Lauren Home accessories. The floors and the original plywood on the ceilings have been polished, the appliances upgraded, and the walls painted a white. But otherwise the house is a bit of a time capsule, a remnant of an earlier, easier era, when summers really were about relaxation, and the only contact desired was not via TikTok, but directly with nature. “This house has such integrity,”. “It’s constructed to follow the contours of the land. It’s a special place.

I love this trend and think it has major staying power because it’s polished without feeling pretentious. It has the same easy vibe as the grandpa aesthetic trend, but with a much-needed dose of coziness and a classic vibe that never goes out of style. This trend is meant to be lived with: leather gets softer, brass gets a beautiful patina, fabric becomes a little worn, and your collections only become more layered. Just like your favorite grandpa, it only gets better with age.
